Agni Natchathiram, also known as Agni Nakshatram, is a spiritually significant festival dedicated to Lord Murugan, widely celebrated across Tamil Nadu. Falling in the peak of summer during the Tamil month of Chithirai, the festival is marked by intense devotion and powerful rituals—even amidst the region’s scorching heat.
Agni Natchathiram May 2025 Dates
Start Date: Sunday, 4th May 2025End Date: Wednesday, 28th May 2025
This 25-day observance coincides with Kathiri Veyil, the hottest time of the year in Tamil Nadu, believed to occur when the Sun transits through the Krittika (Agni) star. Despite the searing weather, thousands of devotees gather at famous Murugan temples like Palani, Tiruttani, and Tiruchendur to mark the occasion.
Significance of Agni Natchathiram
Agni Natchathiram holds deep spiritual importance for devotees of Lord Murugan, also known by names like Skanda, Kartikeya, and Subrahmanya. As the divine warrior and the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, he is revered for bestowing protection, success, and good health.
While the extreme heat during this period is traditionally considered inauspicious for new ventures or travel, devotees continue to offer prayers and seek the Lord’s blessings with unwavering faith. Their belief is that Murugan’s divine grace can shield them from harm and bring prosperity.
Rituals and Traditions
The most vibrant rituals of Agni Natchathiram are seen at the Palani Murugan Temple, where devotees flock to perform Giri Valam, a sacred walk around the hill shrine. Many begin this circumambulation at dawn, walking barefoot and chanting prayers through the day.
Kadamba flowers, believed to be Lord Murugan’s favorite, are worn by female devotees during this pilgrimage. Before beginning the walk, people pray for health, peace, and good fortune.A special Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of Lord Murugan’s idol is conducted daily with water. This water, known as Theertham, is considered sacred. On the final day, this blessed water is distributed to devotees. Many bring it home for protection, while others pour it into local wells or temple tanks to share its divine energy.
Agni Natchathiram is not just a seasonal event—it’s a deeply meaningful time of spiritual focus, self-discipline, and devotion. Despite the sweltering conditions of Kathiri Veyil, the festival reminds devotees of their inner strength and the enduring presence of Lord Murugan in their lives.
As May 2025 approaches, temples and homes across Tamil Nadu will once again resonate with the chants of devotion, ringing bells, and the hope that Lord Murugan’s blessings bring peace and prosperity to all.
