Seven people died and four were injured after a 20-foot-long stretch of a wall inside a temple in Andhra Pradesh's Vishakhapatanam collapsed in the wee hours of Wednesday. The incident took place during the Chandanotsavam festival at the Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Visakhapatnam.

The SDRF and NDRF teams rushed to the spot and swiftly launched the rescue mission at the temple,  District Collector Harendra Prasad confirmed to the news agency ANI.

Vangalapudi Anitha, Home Minister and Disaster Management of Andhra Pradesh, while speaking to ANI, called the incident "unfortunate" after she visited the site of the wall coincided with Akshaya Tritiya and happened at around 2:30 am on Wednesday.

An SDRF jawan also spoke to the media about the incident. "Seven people died in the incident. The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment...We immediately reached the spot after the incident was reported," he was quoted by ANI as saying.

Visuals of the rescue operations that were initiated after the incident took place in the temple surfaced online and showed the SDRF and NDRF teams working tirelessly to rescue the stuck people after the tragedy.

"This is an unfortunate incident that has taken place on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya...it took place at 2.30 am in morning...The government will investigate the incident and will compensate the victims," BJP former MLC Madhav told ANI.

Meanwhile, Vinay Chan, who is the Principal Secretary of Endowment Department said that all the debris have been cleared and that rescue work has been completed. "So it is not appropriate for us to conclude on the reasons for the incident. Prima facie, we have noticed that there was a downpour between 2.30 and 3.30 am in the early hours," he told the media.
