Bank Holiday Today: Banks in several states across India are closed today, October 7, on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima. Valmiki Jayanti is a significant occasion celebrated every year on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin, which typically falls in September or October.

The day honours the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, a revered sage and the author of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Along with the birth anniversary, the day is also celebrated as Kumar Purnima primarily in Odisha.

The festival holds special significance in Odisha, where unmarried women worship Lord Kartikeya, seeking a suitable husband. Kumar Purnima is also known as Sharad Purnima or Kojagiri Purnima in different regions of India.

Banks are closed today in several states across India, including:

1) Karnataka

2) Odisha

3) Chandigarh

4) Himachal Pradesh

Even if banks are closed across these states, bank customers can still access banking services in these regions through:

1) Digital banking: Customers can avail banking services like online banking, mobile banking apps, and UPI services are available 24/7.

2) ATMs: ATMs remain operational for cash withdrawals, balance checks, and mini-statements.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government also declared October 7 as a public holiday to commemorate the Valmiki Jayanti, although it is not mentioned in the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar.

1) Second Saturdays: Banks are closed on the second Saturday of each month.

2) Fourth Saturdays: Banks are closed on the fourth Saturday of each month.

3) Sundays: Banks are closed on all Sundays.

The upcoming bank holidays in October 2025 include Karva Chauth, Kati Bihu, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bali Pratipada, Bhai Dooj, Chhath Puja, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary.

Bank customers are always advised to check with their local bank branch or the RBI's holiday calendar to confirm bank holidays and then plan their transactions accordingly.
