The State Bank of India (SBI), in a regulatory filing, said, "In exercise of powers conferred by clause (b) of section 19 read with sub-section (1) of section 20 of the State Bank of India Act, 1955 (23 of 1955), the Central Government hereby re-appoints Ashwini Kumar Tewari, as Managing Director in State Bank of India."
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has given Ashwini Kumar Tewari another term as managing director (MD) of State Bank of India (SBI) from January 27, 2026, to December 31, 2027.
His current term was to expire in January 2026. Tewari is in charge of the corporate banking division and subsidiaries at SBI.
Earlier, the government made the appointment of Ravi Ranjan as managing director effective from December 15, 2025, until September 30, 2028.
Consequently, the appointment of the fourth MD at SBI has been completed now. The SBI hierarchy is currently made up of the chairman CS Setty and four managing directors—Ashwini Kumar Tewari; Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh, whose responsibility includes overseeing international banking, global markets and technology; Rama Mohan Rao Amara, responsible for retail business and operations; and Ravi Ranjan, who will deal with risk, compliance and the stressed assets resolution group (SARG).
Mr. Ashwini Kumar Tewari is a highly experienced banker with a long career of more than 30 years at State Bank of India (SBI), where he began his professional journey in 1991 as a Probationary Officer.
He has been the Managing Director (Corporate Banking and Subsidiaries) and Whole Time Director since November 21, 2023, supervising major corporate and commercial credit and managing the banking and non-banking businesses of SBI which include credit cards, mutual funds, insurance, capital markets, and custodial services.
He also headed International Banking, IT, and non-bank subsidiaries and was the MD & CEO of SBI Cards, where he played a significant role in the partnerships with GPay, PayTM, and BPCL, among others.
Mr. Tewari is one of the key officers in SBI’s US and East Asia operations and has held various domestic banking leadership roles.
