A Bangladesh court on Wednesday granted bail to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in a sedition case, reported The Daily Star. Das was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area of Dhaka in connection with a sedition case filed in Chattogram on November 25, 2024.

On April 23, Chinmoy's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee prayed to the HC bench to grant bail to his client, saying that Chinmoy is ill and suffering in jail without trial.

Bangladesh's minority Hindus, which constitute only about 8 per cent of the 170 million population, have faced hundreds of attacks in 50-odd districts of the country since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government on August 5. Das had earlier demanded that the interim government in Bangladesh take strong action against the fundamentalists fomenting trouble in that country and arrest them so as to build confidence among the minorities.

Krishna Das Prabhu, also known as Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, is a prominent Hindu leader in Bangladesh. A member of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote, he has been a vocal advocate for the rights of Hindus in the country.

Brahmachari was previously affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and served as its spokesperson. Through his work with ISKCON, he has frequently raised concerns over the safety and rights of Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly in light of targeted attacks against the community.
