Bhai Dooj 2025 Date and Tilak Time: Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej or Bhai Dooj or Bhatra Dwitiya, is a festival that emphasises the importance of brother and sister's relationship. According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Kartika. And this year, Bhai Dooj is being celebrated on Thursday, October 23. On this auspicious occasion, sisters apply tilak to their brothers and pray for their long and happy lives. Brothers give gifts to their sisters. Bhaiya Dooj is also known as Bhau Beej, Bhai Dooj, Bhatra Dwitiya, Bhai Dwitiya, and Bhatri Dwitiya.
According to Drik Panchang,
According to ancient stories, once Yamraj, the god of death, came to meet his sister Yami. Upon her brother's arrival, Yami welcomed him by applying a tilak on his forehead and also prepared special dishes for him. Yamaraj, overwhelmed with compassion and love, asks his sister for a boon. She wishes for his return every year, and that any sister who performs this ritual and applies the tilak will never have to fear the god of death.
Yamaraj was pleased and granted the wish; since then this day is celebrated and is also known as 'Yama Dwitiya' in South India.
It is also said that after defeating the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna went to meet his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him by applying tilak on his forehead. Since then, the day has been known as Bhai Dooj.
