The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced a pilot project that will take the weight and pictures of hallmark gold and silver jewellery. At present, the project is running in 25 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) in India and its main goal is to make hallmarking more modern and to secure the consumers by preventing fraud.
Under this new system, every piece of jewellery will have its photo and weight recorded. The BIS portal is going to keep the digital papers and also the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) and the jewelry will be captured through distinct and accurate pictures.
This measure ensures accurate record-keeping and provides a reliable source for reference during the verification process.
Jewellery and its HUID will be photographed using high-resolution cameras. The weight of each piece will be entered directly from a digital balance into the portal, eliminating manual entry and creating a virtually error-free system. This ensures that every hallmark is accurately recorded and traceable.
The pilot promises several advantages for consumers. Through the BIS Care app, buyers can access photos and weight details of their jewelry, enabling them to verify authenticity in real-time. Any fake or incorrect hallmarks can be detected immediately, reducing the risk of adulteration and boosting confidence in jewellery purchases.
The one-month pilot is currently running at 25 selected AHCs. If proven successful, BIS plans to roll out the system nationwide, setting a benchmark for precision, transparency, and consumer protection in the jewellery industry.

Hallmarking, as defined by BIS, is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metals in jewellery. Hallmarks serve as an official guarantee of purity or fineness.
In India, gold and silver are currently covered under hallmarking regulations.
The main objective of the project is to safeguard the customers against the adulteration of products and at the same time, to make the manufacturers comply with the law in terms of quality, which ultimately will result in the strengthening of trust and credibility in the industry.
