Canada will have to reduce dependence on US: Mark Carney

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that the country will have to reduce its dependence on the United States. He also said that there has been progress in Canada's relations with India.

"I have not met Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, but our foreign ministers have met," the Canadian PM said.

"Those are the discussions we are having and you can see that the traction we're getting... A free trade deal with Indonesia, free trade talks now launched with the Philippines and Thailand," he said.

"We already have free trade CPATPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) with a number of other economies," noted the Canadian PM.

The Canadian prime minister's remarks come amidst his country's renewed trade tensions with the US, following US President Donald Trump’s decision last week to terminate all trade negotiations with Ottawa. He was speaking to reporters after the APEC summit in South Korea.

Underscoring progress his government has made in rebuilding and strengthening ties with India, the Canadian PM described it as part of a broader strategy to diversify Canada’s trade partnerships and reduce dependence on the US.

Carney also said Canada’s approach was already yielding results. “We are building new partnerships with countries around the world... There is no better place to do that than in the fastest-growing region, which represents 60 per cent of the global economy,” said Carney. He was referring to the Asia Pacific region.

He also mentioned “a turning point” in Canada’s relationship with China.
