The central government is set to kick off the 13th tranche of commercial coal mine auctions on Thursday, August 21. The coal auction aims to accelerate coal production and adequate supply of the dry fuel for the rapidly growing domestic energy demand.
The event, set to take place in the national capital, will mark a significant step towards enhancing transparency, completion and self-reliance in the country's coal sector, according to an official statement.

The Ministry of Coal has invited industry leaders, investors, and other stakeholders to participate in the auctions.

Commercial coal mine auctions have attracted robust participation in the past.
The auctions were launched in 2020 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Since then, the commercial auction framework has transformed the domestic coal sector manifold by fostering transparency, driving competition and increasing coal availability for domestic industries.
In the last round of commercial coal mine auctions, which took place in July, seven coal blocks were successfully auctioned, comprising three fully explored and four partially explored coal blocks.
These seven blocks are expected to generate an annual revenue of about Rs 719.90 crore, attract capital investment of approximately Rs 787.50 crore, and create around 7,098 employment opportunities, according to an official statement.
Since 2020, a total of 131 coal blocks have been auctioned, with a production capacity of 277.31 million tonnes per year.
Collectively, the auctioned blocks are expected to generate annual revenue of about Rs 39,359 crore, capital investment to the tune of Rs 41,597 crore, and provide employment for 3,74,916 people in coal-bearing regions, according to official figures.
