Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh, who-led the Kangaroos to World Cup glory in 1999, weighed-in on the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic roster. The sport will make a return to the marquee sporting event after 128 years, with 1900 being the previous edition when it was played. Then Great Britain had defeated France by 158 runs to win the gold medal.

India will look to grab gold this time around but Waugh has revealed there is another contender, who have already begun preparations for the same. Waugh mentioned that China are serious about giving the regulars a run for their money at the sporting extravaganza.

"As soon as cricket's inclusion in the Olympics was announced, China started building a team. They are serious about winning gold," the former Australian cricketer was quoted as saying by ANI.

Waugh also spoke on the soaring popularity of T20, which he feels will dominate the cricket calendar in the coming years. "T20 is massive now. It's billions of dollars, and it's growing every day. Test cricket will survive, but T20 will dominate. Players will soon be contracted mainly to franchises. Test matches might even need special permissions," he added.

Meanwhile, at a time when the relevance of ODIs has become a topic of debate, Waugh batted for the format. He mentioned that the format will remain significant, calling the 50-over World Cup the "Olympics of cricket".

"Everyone seems to think one-day cricket's not going to survive, but then you have the World Cup and it's huge and the ratings are massive and people love it and fall back in love with the game. Then it dies down for a couple years and we go through the same scenario," Waugh said.

"So right now, somehow we're managing to fit three formats of the game in and there's pressure of T10 maybe coming in, so could be four, four formats of cricket. I don't know how that's all going to get managed, but right now it seems to be going okay.

"World Cup is significant for one-day cricket. It's pretty much the Olympics, to play (the World Cup) every four years," he added.
