Indian stock markets rose for the second day in a row on Monday, supported by a stronger rupee and positive global cues. Sentiment improved as investors bet that the US Federal Reserve may cut interest rates early next year, lifting both the Sensex and Nifty. The rally was supported by strong buying in IT and metal stocks.
The BSE Sensex surged 638.12 points, or 0.75%, to close at 85,567.48, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 206 points, or 0.79%, to settle at 26,172.40, comfortably above the 26,150 mark.
Indian equities ended the session on a strong note, with the Nifty 50 rising 0.79 per cent to 26,172.40 and broad-based buying seen across market segments. Market breadth remained positive as 2,255 stocks advanced, while 924 declined.
The overall market capitalisation stood at Rs 472.84 lakh crore, with 89 stocks hitting 52-week highs during the session.
On the Sensex, Trent led the gains, rising 3.56 per cent, followed by Infosys (+3.06 per cent), Bharti Airtel (+2.32 per cent), Tech Mahindra (+2.09 per cent) and Tata Motors DVR (+1.83 per cent). Other notable gainers included HCL Tech, BEL, Sun Pharma, Maruti and TCS.
On the downside, losses were limited, with SBI (-0.60 per cent), Kotak Mahindra Bank (-0.37 per cent), L&T (-0.07 per cent) and Bajaj Finance (-0.05 per cent) ending lower.
Sectorally, Nifty IT outperformed with a 2.06 per cent gain, followed by Nifty Metal (+1.41 per cent) and Nifty Chemical (+1.42 per cent). Pharma, Auto and FMCG indices also closed in the green, while Consumer Durables slipped marginally.
Broader markets outpaced frontline indices, with Smallcap indices rising over 1 per cent and Midcap indices gaining around 0.8 per cent.
