Equity markets closed on a firm note on Monday, supported by strong buying in realty, PSU banks, and midcap stocks. The benchmark BSE Sensex added 39.78 points or 0.05 per cent to settle at 83,978.49, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 41.25 points or 0.16 per cent to end at 25,763.35.

After a cautious start, indices traded in a narrow range for most of the session but managed to hold on to gains amid steady global cues and optimism across key domestic sectors.

Most sectoral indices ended in the green, reflecting broad-based buying interest. The Nifty Realty index surged 2.23 per cent, emerging as the top performer of the day, followed closely by the Nifty PSU Bank index, which climbed 1.92 per cent on strong investor appetite for public sector lenders.

The Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index also gained 1.42 per cent, extending its recent uptrend. Other notable gainers included Nifty Pharma (+1.20 per cent), Nifty Financial Services (+0.62 per cent), Nifty Energy (+0.47 per cent), and Nifty Oil & Gas (+0.79 per cent).

On the other hand, defensive sectors witnessed mild profit-taking, with Nifty FMCG (-0.10 per cent), Nifty IT (-0.17 per cent), and Nifty Consumer Durables (-0.29 per cent) ending in the red.

The broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, led by strong participation from mid and small-cap counters.

The Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index’s 1.42 per cent rally underscored the continued investor preference for broader market segments.
