India's coal production for April hit 81.57 million tonne (MT), a modest rise of 3.63 percent the corresponding period a year ago, according to provisional data shared by the Ministry of Coal on May 1.

Production from captive and commercial mines in April stood at 14.51 MT, a 26.6 percent rise from 11.46 MT seen in April 2024. "This surge highlights the growing contribution of captive mining to India’s overall coal output. It reflects the continued efforts of the Ministry of Coal and its subsidiaries to ensure consistent supply and operational stability in the sector," the statement said.

India’s total coal dispatch during April 2025 reached 86.64 MT, underscoring a steady rise from 85.11 MT seen during April last year. The coal stock held by coal companies saw a notable surge to reach 125.76 MT in April, as compared to 102.41 MT a year ago.

At Coal India (CIL) alone, the total coal stock stood at 105 MT in April, marking a 22.10 percent growth over the same period last year. This surge reflects an impressive annual growth rate of 22.8 percent underscoring the robust performance and efficiency of the coal sector.
