Cyclone Montha Update: Waterlogging in Hyderabad; train movement disrupted, IMD predicts heavy rain in these regions

Cyclone Montha has been making landfall off the coast of Andhra Pradesh since last evening. Due to the cyclone, parts of Hyderabad experienced waterlogging after heavy rainfall on Wednesday, October 29.

Additionally, light to moderate rainfall was reported in parts of Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar districts. On the other side, the parts of Rangareddy district also witnessed rainfall due to the cyclone's impact across Telangana.

The weather office, India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a likelihood of heavy rainfall over eastern and southern Telangana, which is expected to extend to neighbouring areas on Wednesday due to the impact of Cyclone Montha. As a result, the weather in Hyderabad, the state capital, changed abruptly today, and the city experienced rainfall.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Montha crossed the coast near Narasapuram, between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, at around midnight between 11:32 PM and 12:30 AM, and has since moved northwestward, said Dr Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the Meteorological Department in Amaravati. The IMD scientist also mentioned that it will continue moving north-northwestward and enter Telangana.

The movement of trains was disrupted at Dornakal in Telangana's Mahabubabad district on Wednesday as railway tracks were flooded following heavy rain due to the impact of severe cyclone Montha, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Guntur-Secunderabad Golconda Express was stopped at Dornakal Railway Station, while Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express and Adilabad-Tirupati Krishna Express were stopped at Mahabubabad Railway Station.

Meanwhile, the Sainagar Shirdi Express had to be stopped at Kondapalli in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

At least 12 good trains also came to a halt at different railway stations in Andhra Pradesh.

The South Central Railway has already cancelled 127 trains and diverted 14 trains due to Cyclone Montha.

The SCR on Wednesday announced the cancellation of the Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Express and Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, scheduled to depart on October 29 and October 30, respectively.

The SCR also announced that Howrah – Secunderabad and Howrah - SMVT Bengaluru will run on the normal route instead of the diverted route announced earlier.

The cancelled trains for October 29 included Nanded – Visakhapatnam, Visakhapatnam – Lingampalli, Visakhapatnam – Kadapa and Narasapur – Guntur.

Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway, on Tuesday conducted a review meeting on the safety of the train operations and action plan towards preparedness to tackle the cyclone situation.

He held a detailed review meeting with all divisions, along with the principal heads of the departments, especially the Vijayawada and Guntur divisions. He directed the officials to closely monitor the path of the cyclone for undertaking necessary measures. He also advised officials to closely liaise with the state government officials and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams for monitoring the position of the railway-affected tanks in the section to ensure the safety of track and train operations.

As Cyclone Montha loses strength, districts in south Bengal and Kolkata will receive light to moderate rain throughout Wednesday, the Met Office said.

The rain will occur in West Bengal due to the indirect impact of the cyclone, which made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday night.

An official of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata's Alipore said: "Due to the after-effects of the cyclone, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is predicted in several districts. The rain will reduce from Thursday onwards. Although the cyclone made no direct impact in the state, the outer bands of the system passed over the West Bengal coast. As a result, the system triggered rain in south Bengal yesterday. The same pattern will be followed today as well. Yesterday, Kolkata experienced light rain accompanied by gusty winds."

As the post-monsoon season transitions into erratic weather patterns, the IMD Bhopal and Raipur centres have issued urgent advisories for Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Chhattisgarh, attributing intensified rainfall and thunderstorms to a potent mix of a lingering depression, trough, cyclonic circulation, and the advancing Cyclonic Storm 'Montha' in the Bay of Bengal.

According to the forecast of both the centres, "Montha's indirect effects - coupled with a depression over east MP and a trough from Jharkhand - triggered widespread downpours on Tuesday, drenching seven districts including Sheopur and Morena. No precipitation touched urban hubs like Bhopal and Indore, but rural belts bore the brunt."

In the last 24 hours, rainfall lashed most places in Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal, and Rewa divisions; at many spots in Indore and Sagar; a few in Bhopal and Shahdol; and isolated in Narmadapuram and Jabalpur, while others stayed dry.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are likely to occur at isolated places in Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, Seoni, Mandla and Balaghat.

Thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur at isolated places in Vidisha, Rajgarh, Ratlam, Agar, Anuppur, Dindori, Chhindwara, and Pandhurna. Rain and drizzle with thunder have been predicted at few places in Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Agar, Guna, Ashoknagar, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Shahdol, Umaria, Katni, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Maihar; at many in Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, Anuppur, Dindori, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, Pandhurna districts.

Alerts persist for Sheopur, Morena, Burhanpur, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni-Mandla, Balaghat, Dindori, and Anuppur through Saturday, and similar conditions for the next four days.

Similarly, in Chhattisgarh, a red alert has been issued in Bastar as Montha whips up gales in various parts of the state.

Raipur centre warned of strong winds of 40–60 kmph and rain for the next three days due to Montha.

Light to moderate rain has been forecast at many places statewide till October 31.
