Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025: As the Hindu financial year (Samvat) prepares to begin, market participants are looking ahead to the auspicious Diwali Muhurat Trading session, scheduled for October 21, 2025. This year's ceremonial one-hour window will shift to an afternoon slot, with the normal market open from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, deviating from the usual evening schedule.
An analysis of recent performance shows that the special session has consistently ushered in positivity. The NIFTY 50 benchmark index has closed in the green for the last five consecutive years, fueled by festive optimism and symbolic buying.
This winning streak highlights the unique psychology of the session.
In 2022, the index surged by a robust +0.88 per cent, marking the highest gain in the recent period.
Even during the challenging global environment of 2020, the NIFTY 50 demonstrated resilience with a strong +0.47 per cent return.
Over the past five years, certain sectors have proven to be consistent leaders. Banking & Financials and the Auto sector have repeatedly topped the charts, often alongside the IT and PSU segments. High investor participation, driven by both symbolic token purchases and long-term positioning in blue-chip stocks, underscores the significance of this window.
Looking at the last decade (2015-2024), the session shows remarkable predictability. The NIFTY 50 has closed positively in 8 out of 10 years, giving the session an probability of generating positive returns.
This low-volatility, high-probability gain reinforces the tradition. While the Muhurat session is rooted in cultural belief and marks the ceremonial start of the new financial year, its historical data also presents a compelling case for a comparatively stable and bullish hour of trading. Investors, however, are advised to maintain their usual caution, despite the favorable historical trends.
