There has been conjecture regarding MS Dhoni's future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a number of seasons. IPL 2025 commentator Danny Morrison asked Dhoni directly if this would be his final season at the toss for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) game on Wednesday.

When it was MS Dhoni's turn to speak following the toss, Morrison's question was heard above the deafening clamor at the MA Chidambaram Stadium: "Does that mean you are going to come back for next year as well?"

Dhoni replied with a smile: "I don't know, I don't know if I am coming for the next game."

Regarding his participation in the IPL 2025, Dhoni said in August 2024 that his choice will be based on the rules for the forthcoming auction set forth by the IPL governing council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Dhoni underlined that the choice would be taken with CSK's best interests in mind, taking into account things like player retention regulations.

When asked about his future ahead of the 2025 season, Dhoni responded incoherently, saying, "I can play for as long as I want for CSK. That's my franchise. Even if I'm in a wheelchair, they'll drag me," suggesting his deep commitment to the team.

Dhoni has not yet made a formal announcement about his IPL retirement. The team's requirements and the BCCI's retention criteria will probably determine whether he plays in the next season. A definitive announcement about his future with CSK is anxiously awaited by fans.
