It's obvious that Ed Sheeran's recent trip to India had a profound effect on both the singer and his fans. Ed, who is well-known for his moving lyrics and catchy narratives, has now tapped into his Indian experiences to create his upcoming album Play, which is expected to be a lively celebration of creativity, culture, and personal development.
Ed welcomed India's spirit wholeheartedly during his multi-city Mathematics Tour, which visited Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Delhi, and Shillong. His time in India was filled with memorable and unplanned experiences, such as playing music with the great AR Rahman on stage in Chennai and taking a leisurely scooter ride with Arijit Singh.
He even picked up a cricket bat in Bengaluru to play a friendly match against Tushar Deshpande and Riyan Parag, both of whom are IPL players. These experiences—such as car rides, e-rickshaw excursions, and interacting with locals—have now been incorporated into his latest music.
On Friday, Ed gave fans a sneak peek of Play on Instagram, where he was seen singing the Punjabi line “cham cham chamke sitare warghi”—a glimpse into the cross-cultural flair that defines the upcoming album. His love for the country was further solidified with a tattoo in Punjabi inked on his shin, symbolising a heartfelt connection.
In his Instagram caption, Ed shared, “Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life… I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.” He revealed that the album was completed in Goa and captures both the depth and delight of his global travels.

One of the singles from the album, Old Phone, is already out. The track, accompanied by a video montage, offers glimpses of his Indian journey—complete with tabla sessions, sitar melodies, and local colour.
As Ed himself put it, the campaign for Play is meant to be “fun and playful”. With gigs planned on open-top buses and spontaneous pub jams, he hopes to savour the chaos and joy of life more than ever. “The older I get the more I just want to enjoy things… Old Phone also out today, go listen,” he concluded.
