The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former India cricketer Robin Uthappa for questioning in connection with its probe into illegal betting platform 1xBet, according to sources. Uthappa has been directed to appear at the agency's Delhi headquarters on September 22 to record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Uthappa is among several public figures who have come under the ED's scanner over alleged promotional associations with 1xBet, a betting platform banned in India. The agency is examining whether such endorsements aided the platform's growth despite government restrictions.
The summons follow recent questioning of ex-cricketers Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina. Actress Urvashi Rautela, also linked with 1xBet promotions was asked to appear before investigators but has not yet deposed, according to sources.
Alongside Uthappa, the ED has called in more high-profile names. Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been summoned on September 23, while actor Sonu Sood has been directed to appear on September 24.
Officials confirmed that Yuvraj had earlier appeared before the agency in June. More celebrities and influencers are likely to be questioned as the probe expands.
The investigation centres on allegations that 1xBet operated illegally in India, laundered funds, and evaded taxes. Additionally, the platform is suspected of violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by sending money overseas.
A report by NITI Aayog has previously flagged concerns over the fast-growing online gaming and betting ecosystem, which is estimated to involve more than 200 million Indian users. The ED action is part of a broader clampdown on illegal betting and real-money gaming platforms, which authorities say are exploiting legal grey areas while causing social and financial loss.
