‘Felt like we were under war’: Delhi-NCR wakes up to torrential rains, thunderstorm and chaos

Published on 02/05/2025 10:28 AM

A sudden and intense dust storm accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday morning, leading to significant disruptions, infrastructural damage, and the tragic loss of four lives.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for the region, forecasting severe thunderstorms with squally winds reaching speeds of 70–80 km/h. At 5:19 am, the IMD posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“Severe thunder lightning squally winds 70-80 kmph likely over Delhi during next 2 hours.”In a subsequent update, the IMD warned of moderate to intense spells of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, with gusty winds between 40–90 km/h, expected to continue in many parts of Delhi, NCR, and neighbouring regions including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

In a tragic incident, a woman and her three children lost their lives when a tree collapsed onto their home in Dwarka due to the high-speed winds . The storm also caused significant infrastructural damage across the city. A metal structure at Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed, leading to flight delays and diversions.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed that inclement weather had impacted some flights and stated, “Our ground teams are actively coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure passengers continue to have a smooth and efficient experience.”

Airlines such as Air India and IndiGo issued advisories warning passengers of possible delays and urging them to check flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Several areas in Delhi, including Dwarka Underpass, South Extension, Ring Road, Minto Road, RK Puram, and Lajpat Nagar, reported severe waterlogging, leading to traffic snarls and public inconvenience . The downpour also resulted in the uprooting of trees and damage to power lines, further compounding the disruptions.

Wind gusts were particularly strong between 5:30 am and 5:50 am, with speeds recorded at 78 km/h in Pragati Maidan, 62 km/h in Palam, and between 52–59 km/h at Lodhi Road, Pitampura, Nazafgarh, and IGNOU.

Residents took to social media to share their experiences and concerns. One individual wrote: “Omg. First, a dust storm so loud that the howling wind woke me. And now it’s a full-blown storm with lightning, thunder, rain and wind. I’ve been awake and listening/watching for the last 20 minutes. It looks so majestic and powerful. I’m always in awe of storms. I hope everyone is safe.”

Another user expressed alarm: “For a while I thought that we are under war.”

Others shared their astonishment at the intensity of the weather: “If you think this weather is romantic trust me your brain has stopped working. NGL for a moment I thought we were under war. I was this close to peeing my pants”

“In Delhi every weather is extreme be it Delhi rain right now. Feels like it will sweep all of us away," a user remarked.

Another user added, "Heavy rain and thunderstorms never ever seen something like this.”

The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors, avoid taking shelter under trees, unplug electronic devices, and remain cautious around water bodies and electrical conductors. It also warned that kutcha houses and vulnerable structures could suffer partial damage due to flying debris and strong winds.

The department has forecasted continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for the next few days, issuing a yellow alert for the national capital.
