Domestic equity benchmarks registered mild gains on Tuesday, continuing to rise for the fourth trading session in a row, amid sharp buying interest in financial stocks led by ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank and other index heavyweights like RIL and Bharti Airtel. The Sensex rose 136.6 points, or 0.2 per cent, to end at 81,926.8 while the Nifty50 settled with a gain of 30.7 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 25,108.3. 

Jio Financial Services, Bharti Airtel, HCLTech, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors and UltraTech Cement -- closing between 1.0 per cent and 1.4 per cent higher for the day -- rose the most among the 22Nifty50 gainers. On the other hand, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, Trent, Tata Consumer Products, Hindalco, Infosys, SBI and Max Health -- closing between 1.0 per cent and 2.0 per cent lower -- were the worst hit among the 50 index constituents. 

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, RIL and M&M were the biggest contributors to the gains in both benchmarks.

The Nifty Bank -- whose 12 constituents enjoy the maximum weightage of almost 37 per cent in the Nifty50 -- rose 134.5 points, or 0.2 per cent, to settle at 56,239.4. Besides HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, Federal Bank, Canara Bank and IDFC First Bank drove the gains in the banking gauge.

Investors await the onset of a new corporate earnings season on Dalal Street due this week, with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) scheduled to report its July-September numbers on October 9. 

Among broader indices, the Nifty Midcap 100 and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.5 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively. 

Overall market breadth favoured the bears, as only four stocks rose for every five falling scrips on BSE. 

In the BSE 500, the bourse's broadest barometer, 238 stocks rose while over 260 fell for the day.
