In a surprise reveal ahead of its annual I/O developer conference, Google has unveiled a major preview of Android 16 and Wear OS 6 during its dedicated Android Show. The early showcase highlighted sweeping design changes, powerful AI integrations, and enhanced security features—setting the stage for what's to come on 20 May at I/O 2025.
At the heart of Android 16 and Wear OS 6 is Google's new design language—Material 3 Expressive. Building on earlier iterations of Material You, the update introduces a more dynamic and colourful interface with playful animations, bold typography, and greater user flexibility.
Android 16 will offer deeper customisation, especially on the home screen and in Quick Settings, where new tools aim to streamline everyday interactions. Wear OS 6 mirrors this youthful and energetic aesthetic, refreshing the smartwatch interface to better align with modern Android visuals.
Security takes centre stage in Android 16, with Google deploying advanced AI tools to counter new-age threats. The upgraded spam detection model can now identify sophisticated scams, including tactics like fake toll messages.
A new Key Verifier feature enhances secure communication by allowing users to exchange and verify encryption keys—an essential tool against impersonation and fraud. Meanwhile, a practical privacy upgrade allows users to manage accessibility permissions even during calls from unknown numbers.
Google is also rolling out Find Hub, a revamped device-tracking platform replacing the current Find My Device network. With ultra-wideband (UWB) support and satellite connectivity, users can now locate their devices more precisely—even when offline.
Google’s generative AI assistant, Gemini, is now the default intelligence layer across Android devices and will soon power other ecosystems as well. From Android Auto and Google TV to smartwatches and the upcoming Android XR platform, Gemini is being positioned as a central AI experience.
On Wear OS, Gemini will offer more natural interactions for setting alarms, sending replies, and managing daily tasks. In Android Auto, a new “Gemini Live” feature will allow real-time AI conversations during drives. On Google TV, users can expect smarter content suggestions with detailed actor bios and trivia.
While Google's full vision for Gemini on the Android XR platform remains under wraps, more details are expected during I/O 2025 on 20 May.
