New Delhi witnessed a sharp change in weather on Tuesday, October 7, as heavy rain and gusty winds swept across the capital and neighbouring cities. While the downpour offered much-needed relief from lingering heat, it also led to flight delays, traffic congestion and waterlogging in several parts of the city. Intermittent showers began early in the morning and continued throughout the day. After a short pause in the afternoon, thick clouds rolled back in, followed by another round of heavy rain and strong winds across central and south Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the rain was triggered by a western disturbance moving across northwest India. It issued yellow and orange alerts for Delhi, cautioning residents about thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph.
"Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind is very likely over northwest India on 7 October," the IMD said in its bulletin. The department added that heavy rainfall was likely to continue in parts of the region through the night.

The heavy rain affected flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, with several departures and arrivals delayed. Delhi Airport authorities said in a statement that "due to adverse weather conditions, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted", adding that on-ground teams were coordinating with airlines to manage the situation smoothly.
Passengers were advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport and to use the Delhi Metro to avoid traffic congestion on waterlogged roads leading to the terminal.
Several low-lying areas, including parts of South Extension, Moolchand, Lajpat Nagar and Tilak Bridge were waterlogged after hours of rainfall. Long queues of vehicles were seen on key stretches such as Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and Mathura Road, with traffic moving slowly during peak hours.
Municipal authorities said emergency teams had been deployed to clear blocked drains and assist commuters. The traffic police also issued advisories urging motorists to avoid flooded routes and drive cautiously.
According to the IMD, the current weather activity marks one of the final spells of this year's southwest monsoon. Conditions are now favourable for the monsoon's withdrawal from Delhi, parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra over the next few days. Meteorologists said that while the rain has delayed the monsoon's retreat, it has helped replenish soil moisture and improved air quality across the region.
