Former India hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has been awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, for his massive contributions in the field of sports. Sreejesh played a major role in guiding India to consecutive bronze at the Olympics.

Sreejesh received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday evening.

Sreejesh and team won the first bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and the unit replicated the feat at the Paris Olympics, beating Spain 2-1 in the third-place face-off. This incidentally was Sreejesh's final match in Indian colours.

After hanging his boots, Sreejesh continues to serve Indian hockey. He was appointed as the head coach of the junior men's hockey team by Hockey India.

If we focus on Sreejesh's career as a player, the goalkeeper from Kerala took part in four Olympics - from London 2012 to Paris 2024. He also led the Indian contingent in the 2016 edition, which was held in Rio.

Sreejesh made his junior debut in 2004 and two years later at just 16 he earned a place in the senior squad.

Ashwin gets Padma Shri

Meanwhile, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin received the Padma Shri for his immense contribution in the field of cricket. Padma Shri is the fourth-highest civilian award of India after Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan.

Ashwin, who is renowned for his carrom balls, announced his retirement from international cricket midway during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a decision that left most shocked. He retired as the second highest wicket-taker among Indians in Tests. He registered 537 wickets from 106 Tests, only behind Anil Kumble's 619 scalps from 132 appearances in the traditional format of the game.

While Ashwin failed to get his hands on the World Test Championship mace, he did lift two major ICC trophies during his time with the Indian team. He was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and the 2013 Champions Trophy, both under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
