Hyderabad gears up for Miss World 2025 with robust security

Published on 01/05/2025 01:03 PM

Hyderabad is abuzz as it prepares to host the 72nd Miss World pageant, set to run from May 7 to 31. The event, which will see contestants from 140 countries descend on Telangana’s capital, is being positioned as a showcase of the state’s cultural richness, modern infrastructure and global hospitality standards.

A series of high-level meetings have taken place in recent days, with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy personally overseeing the arrangements. In a review at the Command Control Centre, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure “foolproof” security for all participants and guests, from their arrival at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to their stay in hotels and attendance at venues across the city. Special officers are being appointed to oversee each department’s responsibilities and pending beautification works in Hyderabad are being expedited to present the city at its best.

Law enforcement, traffic management and public safety have been major focuses, with Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty chairing a preparatory meeting to finalise logistics and event planning. Inter-departmental coordination is being stressed to guarantee the seamless execution of the month-long festival, which will include not only the main competition but also heritage tours, talent showcases and social impact events.

The pageant’s schedule is packed with activities designed to highlight Telangana’s cultural and historical treasures. After the global contestants arrive on May 6 and 7, the opening ceremony on May 10 at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium will feature traditional folk and tribal dance performances. Over the following weeks, participants will visit landmarks such as Charminar, Ramappa Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Buddhavanam, Yadagirigutta temple and Pochampally, immersing themselves in the region’s heritage and handloom traditions.

Other highlights include a spiritual tour of Buddhavanam, a heritage trip to Warangal, immersive handloom experiences and medical awareness drives at leading hospitals. The Miss World Sports Finale is scheduled for 17 May, followed by a Telangana cuisine festival and cultural event. The continental finale, where contestants are judged within their continental groups, will be held at T-Hub on 20 and 21 May. The grand finale will take place at HITEX Exhibition Centre on 31 May, with Miss World 2024 Krystyna Pyszkova set to crown her successor.

The event is being seen as a major opportunity for Telangana to rebrand itself as a gateway to southern India and to promote its tourism sector. “The overall vision is to put Telangana’s destinations and hidden gems on a global platform,” said Smita Sabharwal, Principal Secretary, Youth Affairs, Tourism and Culture Department, in an interview with The Indian Express. She emphasised that the event will not be a typical closed-door affair but a celebration of the state’s art, culture and hospitality, involving local designers, event managers and students for broader participation.

Security remains a top priority, especially in the wake of recent national security concerns. Officials have assured that detailed plans are in place, with threat perceptions being continually evaluated to guarantee the safety of all international delegates.

The event’s funding has also drawn political attention. While opposition leaders have questioned the expenditure, the government has clarified that only around Rs 27 crore is being spent from the state’s coffers, with the majority of funding sourced from corporate sponsorships.
