Once the most formidable teams in Indian Premier League history, the Chennai Super Kings are all but eliminated from the IPL 2025. Their poor performance this year has been caused by a number of circumstances, including auction errors, injury to their skipper, the declining form of MS Dhoni, and a host of other issues.

CSK's hopes of making the playoffs this season are essentially over, even though they may theoretically still be in the running—all teams are. The team should concentrate on the upcoming season, as Dhoni has already indicated that he wants to "get a secured XI next year and come back strong."

Even if that should be the case, legendary wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist doesn't think Dhoni will be in the starting lineup for the upcoming season. Even though it hurt to accept it, Gilchrist is adamant that Dhoni should bid the IPL farewell and allow the future take over. There has been no impact on CSK since Dhoni took over as captain.

They haven't won a single game since, so their luck has only gotten worse. With two victories from nine games, CSK might be headed for the wooden spoon, and Gilchrist feels Dhoni needs to leave to prevent it.

"The big one, MS Dhoni. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he'll know what he wants to do, but I'm saying, for the future – it's going to cost me this, I know – but he perhaps doesn't need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon," Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.

IPL 2023 would have been the ideal farewell for Dhoni in a perfect world. Dhoni guided CSK to a record-tying fifth IPL championship in his final season as the team's full-time captain. The Mumbai Indians are the only team with that many IPL trophies.

In a final that lasted until the third day due to rain, CSK defeated Gujarat Titans, and many people thought Dhoni would declare his retirement. Dhoni, however, made it apparent when asked if he had anything to add that although retiring would be the best course of action, he wanted to play one more season in front of the Chennai audience. With his long hair and strong striking, he did make a comeback the next year, but CSK just missed the playoffs.

Additionally, things haven't gone smoothly this year either. Dhoni's shot knees haven't helped him, and he has struggled with the bat, scoring 140 runs. Stephen Fleming, the coach of CSK, has repeatedly stated that Dhoni's knees prevent him from running between the wickets as he used to, which is why he frequently bats at No. 7 or 9.

Many supporters felt that Dhoni damaged his legacy by overextending his IPL career, which disappointed them. His greatest years are long gone; he is 43. Gilchrist undoubtedly does not want Dhoni to return, but he may still do so for another year.
