India Post announced that it will close its more than 50-year-old service 'Registered Post' service with effect from September 1, 2025. The service was primarily used by people in rural areas and also by government offices and courts to announce job offers and legal notices.
The decision was taken due to a sharp fall in the usage of services. According to official data, there was a 25 per cent drop from 24.2 crore in 2011-12 to 18.46 crore in 2019-20.
The Registered Post service will now be merged with India Post's Speed Post service. The merger aims to offer faster delivery, enhanced tracking, and greater operational efficiency under the Speed Post system. This service has been operating since 1986.
Meanwhile, the Secretary and Director General of Posts have issued instructions to all government offices, courts, educational institutions, and other bulk users to shift to Speed Post by the September deadline.
On Wednesday, August 6, the Ministry of Communication said that as part of its digital transformation under IT 2.0, India Post has undertaken a massive nationwide rollout of the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) application.
This transition from the legacy system marks a major step toward delivering faster, smarter, and more customer-centric postal services.
Given the scale and complexity of this migration—spanning over 1.64 lakh post offices across urban, rural, and remote areas slowness was observed during the first day of rollout out i.e, on August 4, 2025. However, the technical team worked round the clock and rectified the slowness by 05.08.2025.
According to the ministry, on August 5, more than 20 lakh articles were booked and more than 25 lakh articles were delivered through the new application across India.
"India Post remains firmly committed to ensuring uninterrupted public service. The Department is closely monitoring performance and continues to take all necessary measures to ensure a smooth and efficient transition," it said.
