India and the US and inching closer to the critical trade agreement. As part of the ongoing dialogue, officials from both sides met in Washington last week. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Centre said that India’s Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative’s Office held extensive discussions between April 23 and April 25 last week. This round of discussions followed a previous engagement held in New Delhi in March 2025.
During the Washington meetings, both sides engaged in constructive dialogue on a broad spectrum of issues, including tariff-related and non-tariff barriers. A key focus was charting the course for finalizing the first phase of the comprehensive, mutually advantageous trade agreement by Fall 2025, with emphasis on identifying early areas of consensus. While expert-level sectoral interactions have been ongoing virtually, in-person consultations are scheduled to commence by the end of May.
These discussions reflect a continued commitment to the objectives outlined in the Leaders’ Statement of February 2025, aiming to strengthen India-US economic relations and deepen supply chain collaboration through the Bilateral Trade Agreement.
The developments come as US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said that India may likely be the first to sign the trade deal. He said that several nations have made 'very good proposals.' Giving a tentative timeline, Bessent said that an announcement on trade pact is likely to be made sometime next week. However, he gave no further details
