The last date to file an income tax return (ITR) for FY2025 ends today, September 15. The government has already given an extension of 45 days to non-audit taxpayers. The I-T Department in May announced an extension of the due date for filing ITRs for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The date was extended from July 31 to September 15.
On the last day of ITR filing today, more than one crore returns are anticipated on the final day.
On Saturday, the I-T department had shared that over six crore ITRs had already been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26. It thanked taxpayers and tax professionals for their contribution in reaching this milestone.

"Thank you, taxpayers & tax professionals, for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2025-26 to file at the earliest to avoid last-minute rush. Let's continue this momentum!" the department had said in a post on X.

The Income Tax Department on Sunday refuted reports that claimed that the date of filing tax returns has been extended to September 30.
In a statement, the I-T department said that fake messages were being circulated suggesting that the deadline, originally due on July 31, 2025, and later extended to September 15, 2025, had been pushed to September 30.
To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, “our help desk is functioning on a 24x7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions and Twitter/X,” the I-T Department said.
Last year, ITR filings grew 7.5 per cent year-on-year, and assuming a similar pace, the number could touch 7.8 crore this year. The growth trend has been steady — 6.77 crore returns were filed in AY 2023–24, 5.82 crore in AY 2022–23, and 5.77 crore in AY 2021–22.
