In a major development between Indo-China ties, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will resume from June. Both New Delhi and Beijing have agreed to the arrangement, which is first major people-to-people programme after the Ladakh standoff.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Saturday that the Yatra will be held from June to August via two traditional routes: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim. The pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake in Tibet holds deep religious significance for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists.
“The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, organised by the MEA, will take place during June to August 2025,” the ministry said in a statement.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra had been suspended in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and remained on hold following the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
Tensions began to ease after Indian and Chinese troops disengaged at the final two friction points — Demchok and Depsang — under an agreement sealed on October 21, 2024. Days later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, Russia, and agreed to revive several bilateral mechanisms.
Since then, a series of follow-up meetings have been held to stabilise relations. In January 2025, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Beijing for talks with his counterpart Sun Weidong. During the discussions, both sides agreed to resume the Yatra and implement "people-centric" measures to rebuild ties.
According to the MEA, this year’s Yatra will allow five batches of 50 pilgrims each to travel via Uttarakhand’s Lipulekh Pass, and 10 batches of 50 pilgrims each via Sikkim’s Nathu La Pass.
Applications for the Yatra can be submitted online at kmy.gov.in. Selection will be carried out through a "fair, computer-generated, random and gender-balanced" process.
The MEA highlighted that since 2015, the entire application and selection process has been fully digitised. Applicants are advised not to send physical letters or faxes for inquiries; instead, they can use the feedback section on the official website for updates, observations, or suggestions.
