A Delhi-based female biker was allegedly slapped and verbally abused by a police officer at a checkpoint in Nainital, Uttarakhand, sparking widespread outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The confrontation occurred in the Ramgarh area, a popular tourist destination, where the woman and her friends were stopped by police while on a scooter trip.

According to the footage, the officer, identified as Gulab Singh Kambhoj, demanded the woman’s vehicle documents. Despite her compliance, she presented her helmet and all required papers, Kambhoj struck her during the heated exchange. The woman, who was recording the encounter, captured the officer’s aggressive behaviour, including him grabbing and throwing her phone.

The video shows the tourist questioning the officer’s apparent double standards, pointing out that two male bikers wearing similar helmets were allowed to pass without being stopped. “Abhi 2 ladke gaye same aisa helmet pehenke. Ladko ko kyu nahi roka?” she asked, challenging the officer’s actions and highlighting concerns of gender bias. The situation escalated when Kambhoj slapped the woman in front of her friends, with one companion later stating on social media that the victim’s face was left swollen as a result.

The incident quickly gained traction online, with users demanding accountability and criticising the police for alleged misconduct and gender discrimination. One social media user, quoted by Navbharat Times, called for strict action: “Uttarakhand police’s shameful act is visible here, harassing two female tourists and slapping them. The government must take strict action. Tourists cannot be treated like this”.

In response to the growing backlash, Nainital Police issued a statement on social media, claiming the woman was riding a two-wheeler without a number plate and that the pillion rider was not wearing a helmet. However, these claims were contradicted by the video evidence, which appeared to show both women wearing helmets and presenting their documents.

Nainital Police have assured the public of a fair investigation, stating, “After checking the validity and responsibility of the documents of the rental vehicle, action will be taken against whoever is found guilty (driver, policeman or vehicle owner) as per the rules. Nainital Police is committed to fair investigation and maintaining law and order”.
