A major fire broke out on Wednesday night at Dilli Haat, one of Delhi’s most beloved open-air craft bazaars in the INA area, gutting at least 30 shops and dealing a severe blow to artisans and traders. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The incident has shocked frequent visitors and tourists who often flock to Dilli Haat to experience India’s diverse handicrafts, handlooms, regional cuisines, and cultural performances—all under one roof.
According to Delhi Fire Services Chief Atul Garg, the fire was reported at 8:55 PM, prompting the dispatch of 14 fire tenders. The blaze was brought under control after several hours of firefighting. Preliminary estimates suggest that over two dozen shops were destroyed, though police initially put the number at 25.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of thick smoke and leaping flames that swept through the open-air market's vibrant stalls. Traders, many of whom come from across India to showcase regional crafts, reported devastating losses.
“I’ve lost goods worth nearly ₹1.5 crore,” said Shauket Ahmed, a long-time shop owner. Another vendor lamented losing everything earned over a lifetime. “This was my life’s savings.”
Concerns have been raised over fire safety measures at the site. Vendors claimed the market lacked basic firefighting equipment and that it took emergency services over an hour to arrive.
Delhi Tourism and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra, who visited the spot, confirmed there were no injuries and assured that the situation was under control. He also expressed solidarity with the affected traders.
The market was evacuated swiftly, and police are investigating the cause, suspected to be a short circuit. The iconic market, popular with both domestic and international tourists, remains partially shut as authorities assess the damage and recovery efforts begin.
