Grid operators report that a large blackout that affected portions of southern France, Portugal, and Spain on Monday left millions without power and disrupted communications and transportation networks throughout the region.

The extensive outage's cause has not yet been determined.

Spain’s national electricity grid operator, Red Eléctrica, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that power had been restored to much of the north and south of the country. Meanwhile, Portugal’s grid operator, REN, confirmed that the entire Iberian Peninsula was affected, along with parts of southern France.

In Spain, Madrid’s Barajas International Airport temporarily lost power, causing major disruptions. Telecommunications were also hit, with residents across the region reporting issues accessing mobile networks. Several other airports in the affected areas have experienced significant delays, according to a report by Euronews.

The disruption has not been limited to air travel. Rail services across Spain have been severely impacted, with a spokesperson for the national railway company telling AFP that train operations had been thrown into chaos.

The blackout has caused widespread disruption across the Iberian Peninsula, which has a population of more than 50 million. However, the exact number of people directly impacted by the outage is still unknown.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to fully restore electricity and pinpoint the cause of the massive failure, as authorities continue to work through the aftermath.

The EU says it is in contact with Spain and Portugal to investigate the cause of the massive blackout.
