Mid-cap, small-cap indices hit 7-Week High; MCX, Tata Consumer, BEL among top movers

Top gainers on BSE, NSE Today: Indian equities gave up some of their early gains but remained in positive territory on Wednesday afternoon. Both the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty were trading marginally higher in muted but positive trade, while several mid- and large-cap counters were showing sharp moves.

Shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX) jumped more than 4 per cent after reports that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is weighing steps to expand the scope of participation in the commodity derivatives market. According to a Reuters report, SEBI is discussing with the government to let banks and pension funds trade commodities and may open up non-cash settled, non-agricultural derivatives to foreign portfolio investors. Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said these measures are aimed at deepening liquidity and strengthening the commodity market.

Tata Consumer Products Ltd. advanced over 3 per cent intraday after management reaffirmed its strategy to premiumise its portfolio, according to Informist Media. The company has held leadership in the tea segment for nearly three years and is now targeting volume leadership.

Defence major Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) traded higher on renewed order inflows, announcing an additional order worth Rs 712 crore. The stock has risen 7 per cent in the past month and delivered 44 per cent gains over the last year. BEL also features among Motilal Oswal’s top picks in the defence segment.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd. added more than 3 per cent in intraday trade, taking its year-to-date gains to nearly 20 per cent. Anand Rathi’s latest report projects up to 9 per cent more upside over the next 12 months on the back of strong order execution and a robust pipeline.
