After Chennai Super Kings became the first club this year to be officially eliminated from the playoff race after losing their fifth IPL 2025 match at home (Chidambaram Stadium), CEO Kasi Viswanath stopped MS Dhoni on the sidelines to speak with the renowned cricketer.

In yet another lopsided match, CSK fell to Punjab Kings by four wickets on Wednesday. Dhoni would not participate in an IPL final for consecutive years for the first time in the league's history. Last year, CSK had failed to qualify for the playoffs.

After Ruturaj Gaikwad missed the 18th season due to an elbow injury, Dhoni took over as captain of CSK, but the team's results stayed the same. The 43-year-old talismanic skipper, who has won five titles and played in eleven finals, was unable to work his magic as CSK remained in bottom place with just four victories in ten games this season.

CEO Viswanath's conversation following the defeat to PBKS is being viewed with particular significance at a time when doubts about Dhoni's IPL future lingered despite CSK's outspoken display of support. Viswanath and Dhoni were smiling, so it didn't seem like anything serious.

Dhoni joked that he wasn't even sure if he would return for the following game when former New Zealand pacer Danny Morrison approached him at the toss about his future for the upcoming season, even though CSK still has four games left this year. He grinned and added, "I don't know, I'm coming for the next game."

Legendary South African cricketer Shaun Pollock stated that he thinks CSK can succeed under Ruturaj Gaikwad and that he would be shocked to see Dhoni playing for the team next season.

"I don't think (CSK needs Dhoni the captain next season). He is having to step in because Gaikwad is injured. He has nothing more to achieve. He has won as much as anyone. It's gonna be down to what he wants because of the legacy he has left and the impact he has had on the franchise, they have kind of given him free rein to be the one who makes the call. We will wait until you have decided you have had enough. Will that change? I don't know. Would the owners have a word with him? We've tried to predict this for so long and now we sound like a broken record. We can't get to the bottom of it. But yeah, I would be very surprised if he were there next year," Pollock said on Cricbuzz.

Adam Gilchrist, another cricket veteran, stated that Dhoni will have to make a decision on his future. “He's an icon. He's above the Hall of Fame. He has set the standard for anyone who tries to get into that Hall of Fame in this tournament. It is going to be a long time before a single player can have such an impact on building the legacy of IPL cricket. Whatever does happen, there's plenty of time to reflect on that, and knowing him, he might not say anything and keep us guessing until next year. Whatever the case, he has had the biggest impact in IPL,” Gilchrist added.
