Muhurat Trading Special: In 2025, why is it happening in afternoon?

Published on 20/10/2025 01:47 PM

Muhurat Trading is an auspicious one-hour session that marks a symbolic start to a prosperous financial year. Traditionally held in the evening after Lakshmi Poojan, the special session blends cultural reverence with market optimism. But this year, the timing has taken an interesting turn.

For 2025, both the NSE and BSE have scheduled the Muhurat Trading session in the afternoon instead of the usual post-evening window. The special trading hour will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm.

The change in timing is aimed at aligning the special session with Kartika Amavasya Tithi, which is regarded as highly auspicious in Hindu astrology. By synchronising Muhurat Trading with this shubh muhurat, both exchanges seek to preserve the spiritual essence and enhance the traditional significance of the event.

Additionally, the afternoon schedule allows for smoother operational and settlement processes for brokers and back offices, providing logistical convenience without diluting the tradition’s essence.

Muhurat Trading traces its roots to the Gujarati and Marwari trading communities, where Diwali marks the start of a new financial year. Traders perform “Chopda Pujan”—the worship of account books—before opening fresh ledgers, symbolizing the beginning of new financial journeys.

Over the years, the ritual has evolved into a formalized session on stock exchanges, retaining its symbolic value as a gesture of prosperity and hope.

Despite the afternoon shift, the sentiment behind Muhurat Trading remains unchanged. Investors participate not just to trade, but to make an auspicious beginning to Samvat 2082, the new year in the Hindu calendar. Many buy shares for long-term blessings rather than short-term gains, viewing the session as a gesture of optimism and faith.
