NASA is reaching out to the public to help classify thousands of galaxies captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. Through the Galaxy Zoo project, volunteers can assist scientists in exploring the universe’s vast expanse. The project aims to answer important questions about galaxy formation and evolution. With over 500,000 images available, there is more data than researchers can handle alone.

The Webb telescope's ability to see back in time lets us catch a glimpse of the first galaxies ever observed. These faraway galaxies, some which existed billions of years ago, contain critical clues to our universe's origins. By examining the structures of galaxies of different distances away, scientists hope to know how galaxies formed, evolved, and interacted with each other. The mission encourages all ages to be part of solving these cosmic mysteries.

Christine Macmillan, an Aberdeen, Scotland volunteer, was excited to report: "It's fabulous to be seeing galaxies forming for the first time." Volunteers can simply sign up and answer basic questions about the shape of each galaxy, helping to conduct groundbreaking research. Anyone 10 years and older can participate.

Galaxy Zoo: The Role of Volunteers and AI

Galaxy Zoo has a long history of citizen engagement, dating back to 2007 and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Volunteers have helped research images from such famous telescopes as Hubble and Euclid. Galaxy Zoo has made fantastic findings, such as the identification of galaxy mergers and how spiral arms form.

With the inclusion of Webb telescope observations, the science team is adding ZooBot, an artificial intelligence system that assists in classifying galaxies. ZooBot is capable of processing easier images based on past observations but requires human guidance for more complex or dim structures. As the volunteers classify the images, they assist in tuning the AI system, which makes it wiser for future classifications.

Apart from contributing to the advancement of space research, Galaxy Zoo provides a thrilling chance for anyone who wants to be part of space exploration. As volunteers and AI work together, they will help classify an almost infinite number of galaxies correctly, resulting in further understanding of the history of the universe.
