The Sensex rose 1,372 points to 74,068, while the Nifty closed at 22,912, with 45 of its constituents ending in the green.
Market breadth remained firmly positive, with the advance-decline ratio on the NSE at 3:1, indicating strong participation across the board. Broader markets outperformed, with the midcap index gaining 1,369 points to 54,087, while the Nifty Bank index surged 1,168 points to 52,606.
All sectoral indices ended higher, with Nifty Capital Market emerging as the top gainer. Stocks across auto, banking, metals, IT and realty saw strong buying interest.
Among key movers, Larsen & Toubro rose nearly 5% to emerge as the top Nifty gainer, while InterGlobe Aviation also gained close to 5% as crude prices eased. Asian Paints climbed over 4% after announcing a 6–8% price hike effective April 10, while Kotak Mahindra Bank rose more than 3% following an upgrade by Nomura.
HDFC Bank snapped its four-day losing streak, gaining around 3%. Oil marketing companies such as HPCL and BPCL surged up to 5% tracking softer crude prices.
