Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday received Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his parliamentary constituency Thiruvananthapuram "on time" despite facing delays at the “dysfunctional” Delhi airport.

The Prime Minister arrived in Kerala to officially commission the Vizhinjam port.

“Despite delays at the dysfunctional Delhi airport, managed to land in Thiruvananthapuram in time to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival in my constituency. Looking forward to his official commissioning of Vizhinjam port, a project I have been proud to have been involved with since its inception,” Tharoor posted on X.

He shared pictures of him welcoming Prime Minister Modi at the airport.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi faced major disruptions on Tuesday, with over 600 flights delayed, including 198 arrivals and 443 departures, throwing travel plans into chaos. The delays were caused by a mix of unfavourable weather conditions and ongoing maintenance work on one of the airport’s key runways (10/28).

PM Modi will officially commission the Vizhinjam International Seaport on Friday, placing Kerala firmly on the global maritime map.

The port in Thiruvananthapuram district is expected to transform India's role in international trade and shipping.

The project was completed at an estimated cost of Rs 8,867 crore, according to NDTV. The port received its commercial commissioning certificate on December 4 last year.

In a post on 'X', Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said, "Tomorrow marks a historic moment as Shri Narendra Modi ji, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, dedicates the Vizhinjam International Seaport to the nation." "This landmark project—the largest-ever state investment in any port in the country, with two-thirds of the cost borne by the Government of Kerala—reflects the state's strong commitment to development.

Currently equipped to handle 1 million containers per annum, Vizhinjam port is set to expand by an additional 6.4 million over two more phases
