The Income Tax (I-T) Department has extended the due date for Income Tax Return (ITR) filing for FY 2024-25 by a day. The I-T Department informed through a post on X (earlier Twitter).
"KIND ATTENTION TAXPAYERS! The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025,” the taxman wrote on microblogging site.
The original deadline for ITR filing was July 31, 2025, which was extended till September 15, 2025 by the Central Board of Direct Taxes. The new extension for a day is due to the several complains of technical glitches on the official e-filing portal website incometax.gov.in.

Earlier on Sunday, the Income Tax Department had said that the due date for filing ITRs had not been extended beyond September 15, rejecting claims circulating on social media about a further extension.
In a statement, the I-T department had said that fake messages were being circulated suggesting that the deadline, originally due on July 31, 2025 and later extended to September 15, 2025, had been pushed to September 30.
