Pahalgam Terror Attack Aftermath: Several Indian states likely to conduct mock self-defence drill on May 7

Rising India-Pakistan (Indo-Pak) Tensions Latest Update: The Narendra Modi 3.0 government on Monday directed several states to conduct a mock self-defence drill on Wednesday, May 7, sources told Zee Business. The drills will be focused on effective civil defence, they said. The news comes in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 people dead. Condemning the cowardly act by terrorists, New Delhi has already suspended a crucial water treaty that supplies water to four-fifths of Pakistani agricultural lands.
The central government issued guidelines regarding the mock drill to states, according to the sources.
The measures being planned include operationalisation of air raid warning sirens and training of civilians and students to protect themselves in teh event of a hostile attack, said the sources.
Meanwhile, Pakistan was learnt to have carried out a second missile test in three days on Monday after stating that it was preparing for an incursion by India.
India has categorically accused Pakistan of involvement in the April 22 terror attack, which marks the worst such assault on civilians in India in nearly two decades. Islamabad has denied the allegations. India has taken a clear stand that sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan, targeting Jammu and Kashmir, impedes its rights under the Indus Water Treaty.
Several global leaders, including US President Donald Trump, have condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, extending support to India.
Last week, India informed its bordering neighbour about its decision to keep the Indus Water Treaty suspended with immediate effect, citing a breach of the treaty's conditions by Pakistan.
Under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, the water of the Indus river and its tributaries is shared between the neighbours.

India has banned the import of goods from the Pakistani side and even barred Pakistani ships in the wake of the deadly terror attack.
Since independence in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir. Besides, there have been several short conflicts between the bordering countries.
