Pahalgam terror attack: UN chief Guterres dials Jaishankar, Pak PM Sharif, urges de-escalation of tensions

Published on 30/04/2025 05:40 AM

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appealed to India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid any confrontation following last week's deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people.

According to a statement released by the UN on Tuesday, Guterres spoke separately with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

During the conversations, he strongly condemned the April 22 attack in the Baisaran Valley and expressed deep concern over the heightened tensions between the two neighbours. The UN chief reiterated the importance of pursuing justice through lawful and accountable means and warned that any escalation could lead to “tragic consequences.”

He also offered his “Good Offices” to facilitate dialogue and support efforts to reduce tensions and restore calm in the region.

Taking to the microblogging site X, Jaishankar stated he appreciated the UN Secretary-General’s unequivocal condemnation of the attack, and reiterated India’s resolve to ensure the perpetrators, planners, and sponsors are brought to justice.

"Appreciate his (Guterres') unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability," he wrote, further reiterating, "India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice".

India has squarely blamed Pakistan for backing the perpetrators of the attack, which targeted tourists and local civilians.

New Delhi, a day after the attack, announced a series of diplomatic and strategic steps, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the expulsion of Pakistani military officials, and the closure of the Attari land transit point.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly granted the Indian armed forces complete operational freedom to determine the timing, method, and target of India's response to the attack, signalling a strong stance amid rising regional tensions.
