Pakistan government has increased Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed's security fearing a covert operation following the Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of 26 people.

Saeed - who is wanted in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks - has been deliberately placed in a densely populated area which has civilians residing around, a mosque and a madrassa as well, as per a report in The Times of India.

Former commandos from Pakistan's Special Service Group (SSG) have been deployed for the 77-year-old's protection. Additional personnel have also been assigned the task to keep up security at several of his residences, including the house in Lahore's Mohalla Johar.

Hafiz Saeed, officially, is serving a 46-year jail sentence in multiple terror financing cases. In 2022, he was sentenced to 31 years in prison in two separate cases of terror financing. As he is currently imprisoned, on paper, his house has been turned into a temporary sub-jail.

According to sources, a control room has been set up to track every movement through gesture detection CCTV cameras in 1 km radius.

At least 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed when terrorists opened fire at Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam town in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on April 22.

Several reports, citing security agencies, have suggested the terror attack was carried out by a hardened module operating under the control of Hafiz Saeed. The module behind the attack, which has triggered several diplomatic reactions from India against Pakistan, is affiliated with the banned outfit LeT. It carried out the attack with support from local militants, over ground workers from the Valley.

The module has been long active in the Kashmir Valley and the Pahalgam terror attack has only brought them back in the spotlight.

In wake of the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack, India announced several diplomatic measures including suspending the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals, expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and closing the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari among others.
