Pakistani envoy runs to Trump to help ease tensions with India, calls Kashmir ‘flashiest nuclear flashpoint’

Published on 01/05/2025 05:47 PM

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has appealed to President Donald Trump to intervene and help de-escalate tensions with India, as diplomatic strains deepen following the Pahalgam terror attack, reported Newsweek.

“If we have a president who is standing for peace in the world as a pronounced objective during this administration, to establish a legacy as a peacemaker, or as someone who finished wars, defied wars and played a role in de-confliction, resolving the disputes, I don't think there is any higher or flashier flashpoint, particularly in nuclear terms, as Kashmir,” Sheikh was quoted by Newsweek as saying.

Earlier this week, Pakistan’s defence minister Khawaja Asif said that a military incursion by India was imminent. On Wednesday, their information minister Attatullah Tarar claimed there was "credible evidence" of an attack by India "within next 24-36 hours".

Sheikh’s reference to Kashmir as “flashiest flashpoint in nuclear terms” underscores Pakistan’s attempt to internationalise the issue once again amid global scrutiny over its alleged links to the attack.

The Pahalgam attack, which left 26 civilians dead, has been claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). India has directly blamed Pakistan for supporting the attackers and enabling cross-border terrorism, followed by a raft of measures downgrading diplomatic ties with Islamabad, including suspension of Indus Waters Treaty and closure of Wagah-Attari border.

Instead of acknowledging the growing evidence linking Pakistan-based elements to the assault, Islamabad has gone into damage control mode. Ambassador Sheikh’s appeal to Trump appears to be part of a broader attempt to revive international mediation narratives, particularly invoking Trump’s past remarks about offering to "mediate" the Kashmir conflict during his presidency.

By invoking nuclear rhetoric, Pakistan is once again treading a familiar path — raising fears of a catastrophic outcome to draw global attention while denying involvement in the very acts of terrorism that spark such tensions.
