Pharma Stocks in Focus: Sun Pharma, Biocon, Natco Pharma tumble as Trump announces 100% tariff on branded drugs

Published on 26/09/2025 09:55 AM

Pharma Stocks Today: Pharma stocks fell sharply on Friday as President Donald Trump announced a 100 per cent tariff on imports of branded or patented drugs from October 1, 2025, unless companies establish US-based manufacturing facilities.

At 9:22 am IST, the Nifty Pharma index was down 2.3 per cent, with all constituents trading lower. Natco Pharma, Gland Pharma, and Sun Pharma led the losses, sliding up to 4 per cent. Investors are closely watching Indian pharma exports and the impact on Nifty Pharma stocks today.

Sun Pharma and Biocon, key branded players in the US market, are in focus after the announcement. Biocon recently commissioned a U.S. plant, shielding it from the tariff, while Sun Pharma may face some exposure unless additional local manufacturing is established. The news has put Sun Pharma stock news and Biocon US plant updates under the spotlight for investors.

President Trump posted on Truth Social: “Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100 per cent tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product, unless a company is building their pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in America. There will be no tariff if construction has started.”

The announcement is aimed at encouraging companies to onshore production. Analysts say the tariffs will mainly affect branded drugs, while generic drugs exported from India remain exempt.

Generic drugs have been excluded from the new US tariffs, likely boosting Indian exporters such as Dr Reddy’s, Lupin, and Aurobindo. These companies depend heavily on the US generics market, which accounts for a significant portion of their revenue. India supplies nearly 45 per cent of U.S. generics and 10–15 per cent of biosimilars by volume.

Experts note that generic drugs operate on thin margins, and if tariffs had been applied, it could have disrupted production and caused shortages in the U.S. However, the exemption protects major Indian pharma stocks today from severe impact.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted the need to bring pharmaceutical manufacturing back to the U.S., stating: “Do we want life-saving drugs and medicine made in China or here in the United States? This is a common-sense policy.”
