A message is being spread on WhatsApp claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked banks to stop disbursing Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025.

The message also states that by 31 March 2026, Rs 500 notes will be completely removed from 90 per cent of ATMs and only Rs 200 and Rs 100 notes will be available. So start liquidating the Rs 500 notes that you have in hand from now on.

The message is going viral on social media, and people are worried about the ban on Rs 500 notes.

The government organization PIB FactCheck investigated this message going viral on social media. PIB has said that this viral message is completely fake.

Don’t fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it!"

These kinds of messages to confuse people keep getting viral so often. Many times such messages can create a situation like panic-buying or a cash crunch. Therefore, the government always suggests verifying such news on PIB before taking any action.

Earlier, a viral WhatsApp message claimed that the Indian government is providing free laptops to students as part of a nationwide scheme. However, this was the fake message, the Press Information Bureau's Fact Check team (PIB Fact Check) informed.
