During a recent appearance on Farah Khan's YouTube show, Pooja Bedi shared a delightful and humorous anecdote from the filming of the iconic "Pehla Nasha" song in the 1992 film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Bedi, along with her daughter Alaya F, joined Farah for a pancake-making session, which naturally led to conversations about their lives and careers.
Farah, who has a long-standing professional relationship with Pooja, reminisced about trying to choreograph her, playfully commenting to Alaya, “I have spent many days with your mother. I tried to make her dance a lot. I want to ask her whose genes she has got. Because you are a fantastic dancer." Alaya modestly replied, “Actually, I didn’t know how to dance at all. I worked very hard on this." Pooja then interjected with a funny tidbit about Alaya's early dance attempts, saying there’s a video of Alaya trying to teach dance when she was in first class." When Alaya jokingly pleaded with her not to share it, Pooja quipped, “Your dance then, is my dance now."
The conversation then shifted to the memorable "Pehla Nasha" sequence, where Pooja gracefully stood atop a car, her red dress billowing in the wind, reminiscentof Marilyn Monroe. Farah asked Alaya if she had seen Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and if she knew the story behind the scene where “she stood on that car."
Pooja then jumped in to share the hilarious behind-the-scenes chaos. Farah mentioned the presence of spot boys during the shoot, to which Pooja elaborated on the challenges of maintaining her composure and her dress in the windy conditions. “He was standing behind. And every time they would put the stand under me. And I was standing like this. I am trying very hard to hold my dress down. So, I am standing there like this. Fan is going, fan is going."
She continued, hilariously recounting her repeated assurances that everything was alright, while unknowingly facing a wardrobe malfunction from behind. “I went on saying – nothing is going, nothing is going. Every now and then, nothing is happening. Every time I say, nothing is happening… Then I am holding it down…. And everyone is laughing. Why? Because it’s down from the front here. But it’s flying off the back. And that’s the first spot…"
Pooja then revealed the comical consequence of the wind and her billowing dress, stating that the spot boy witnessed more than intended. “He saw my underwear while the dress blew from the back," she exclaimed, leading Farah to add that the poor spot boy “fell" upon seeing the unexpected reveal.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, directed by Mansoor Khan, was a popular coming-of-age sports drama featuring Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Mamik Singh, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Pooja Bedi’s anecdote provides a lighthearted glimpse into the making of one of its most cherished and visually stunning songs.
