Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreement with Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the development of a high-capacity cross-border power transmission system. The pact was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal and Nepal's Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising.
Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, and POWERGRID's CMD Dr RK Tyagi and Director (Personnel) Dr Yatindra Dwivedi were present at the occasion.
The proposed Cross-Border Transmission System Projects include the development of the Inaruwa (Nepal) – New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link and Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal) – Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link. Once completed, these transmission corridors will substantially enhance the electricity exchange between India and Nepal, strengthening regional energy security, improving grid resilience, and contributing to sustained economic growth in both nations.
As on 15th October 2025, POWERGRID has commissioned and is operating 287 substations, and more than 1,80,864 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, and 5,81,831 MVA of transformation capacity. With the adoption of latest technological tools and techniques, enhanced use of automation and digital solutions, POWERGRID has been able to maintain average transmission system availability of 99.83 per cent.
