Indian equity markets are expected to start Friday’s session on a weak note after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs, including a 100 per cent levy on all branded or patented pharmaceutical products entering the US from October 1, 2025. The US administration also imposed a 25 per cent duty on heavy trucks and a 50 per cent levy on kitchen cabinets and related products, further dampening global sentiment.
At 07:50 AM, GIFT Nifty Futures were trading 10 points lower at 24,954, signalling a muted start for domestic indices.
Across Asia-Pacific, stocks opened in the red on Friday after the US tariff announcement. South Korea’s Kospi index was down 1.9 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.3 per cent, and Australia’s ASX 200 was down 0.3 per cent.

On Wall Street, major US indices ended lower for a third straight session on Thursday as stronger-than-expected US economic data — including a sharp fall in jobless claims and a significant upward revision in GDP growth — complicated expectations around the Federal Reserve’s rate-cut trajectory. Overnight, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.5 per cent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.5 per cent, and the Dow Jones ended 0.38 per cent lower.
