Railways plans stricter baggage rules; heavier luggage may cost extra

Train passengers may soon have to pay extra for carrying overweight or heavy luggage, as the Indian Railways is preparing to implement stricter baggage rules similar to those followed at airports, according to sources.

The move aims to reduce inconvenience faced by passengers inside coaches due to large bags and bulky items.

Under the new system, passengers carrying oversized luggage may be required to book it separately in the baggage section rather than taking it inside passenger compartments.

The government has already begun installing weighing machines and scanners at major stations across the country.

The pilot project is being rolled out under the North Central Railway (NCR) zone, with an estimated infrastructure spending of Rs 960 crore.
