There is an air of inevitability about it. Mumbai Indians start the Indian Premier League on a sluggish note and find themselves in the bottom half after the first few games. Then something changes. It has happened in the past and in IPL 2025, they are topping the table with six straight wins. For a team which had managed just one win in the first five games, topping the table is some turnaround.

It has happened because of some incredible all-round performances. When the time comes, the batters rise to the occasion. And when it came to them, the bowlers, too, made a telling impact. This year, the bowling unit took time to get its act together. Once Jasprit Bumrah returned from injury, they have not looked back. Bumrah’s presence is of course a massive strength of this team.

Mumbai Indians have performers in every position. Rohit Sharma’s ordinary start was a bit of a concern. But India’s Test and ODI captain has made three half-centuries in the last four games and provided breezy starts. Ryan Rickelton has also come good after an indifferent beginning. Not the best of runners between wickets perhaps, these two have regularly found the boundaries early on.

The real strength of this Mumbai Indians team is the middle-order. Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma are the best the country has when it comes to this. All three are part of the national team. Pandya wasn’t as effective early on, but he has regained his touch. SKY and Varma have tormented the bowlers relentlessly. No wonder that this team has scored 200-plus four times.

While Bumrah is the spearhead in bowling, this department is not dependent only on him. Deepak Chahar has made taking wickets with the new ball a habit and is doing it in almost every match. Trent Boult has used his experience and range of skills to great effect. Due to them, Mumbai Indians have taken wickets in the first six overs. Even Corbin Bosch has been a handy addition. Pandya the bowler has also made his presence felt.

For a team which has all the bases covered, spin is an area where they are a bit thin on resources. Their combination is such that they don’t usually have a specialist spinner in the XI. But thanks to the Impact Player rule, they have been able to bring in leg-spinner Karn Sharma when required. The veteran responded with a Player of the Match effort against Delhi Capitals and took three more wickets against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday.

Other than the resources on the field, Mumbai Indians are one of the better-run sides off it. The team management has had plenty of success in the past and those running the affairs are well aware of the dos and don’ts. They have seen for years what works and what needs to be done. This combination of efficiency on and off the field sets them apart. And now, with momentum on their side, Mumbai Indians appears to be the team to beat in IPL 2025.
